< PreviousHORSE PROGRESS DAYS 202118 LBusiness & Friendship at Horse Progress Days a Pioneer homesteader, 2 more forecarts, and a mini wagon. And they thought by now the smile on harness maker Rudy’s face must have faded a bit, so they went to see him again and bought more harness. Jim Hilgendorf of Shipshewana Trailer had loaded the first container to ship to Bogota and Shannon Cobbs had hauled and accompanied the first group of horses to Miami, but Gerald decided he could do it this time; how hard could it be? Just stick the stuff in and send it, right? Well the trip to Miami with the horses was great, a chance at a working vacation as it were. But, the container? The Pabons had arranged a shipping date from Bogota with a shipping company and the shipping company informed Gerald that any delay in shipping would cost him $100 per hour after the first two hours. And if anything broke, he would have to replace it from his own pocket, and there were bills of lading to fill out, and other paperwork. He got it done with nothing breaking and he met the deadline, but not without a bit of sweating, maybe even some lost sleep! So what does the Pabon family do with all of these horses and equipment? Some of it is for others, but most of it stays with them. They have two fulltime horsemen employed at the farm and in answer to the question of “do you farm with them?” they said “not quite”. They show them, especially at the National Expo held every two years in Bogota that is judged by North American judges who usually like their horses. They breed the mares and raise foals and they pointed out that horses in their part of the world cycle all year and foal any time, not just in the spring like in the northern hemisphere. They have had good luck with all of their breeding efforts and all of the different breeds except the Clydesdales who seem to have a hard time conceiving. Julian stressed that the horses they are looking for and buying need to have good confirmation, not just action, and that a poorly made horse with good action is not one that they would want to buy. Julian the younger talked about the experience of coming to the US to Horse Progress Days and then buying all these horses and all the things to go with them. He said the family wants to attend HPD regularly. (The interview for this story took place in Arcola Illinois in 2013) he talked about the friendship that has developed between he and his parents and Gerald and his wife Mary Ruth and their four children. He talked about the different way of doing business in the US compared to Columbia where everything is bartered and bargained for. www.horseprogressdays.com / Page 123 Welcome to Horse Progress Days Breakfast Buffet 6:00am to 10:30am Lunch & Dinner Buffet 11:00am to 8:00pm Also Featuring Daily Specials & Full Menu Hours July 33rrdd and 44th 6:00am to 8:00pm Located right across the street from Horse Progress Days “OHIO’S FARM TIRE LEADER” & A LEADER NATIONWIDE IN AGRICULTURAL TIRES CELEBRATING 50 YEARS Millersburg Tire Service, Inc. 7375 SR 39 E • Millersburg, Ohio 44654 phone: 330-674-1085 • fax: 330-674-6598 www.millersburgtireservice.com Hours: Monday - Friday 7:00 to 5:30 Your Source for ALL Your Farm Implement Tire Needs We ship anywhere Specializing in Complete Tire Service LIVESTOCK NUTRITION Mt. R25 HORSE PROGRESS DAYS 2021 A New Grass Mower from Narvon By Dale K. Stoltzfus The essence of Horse Progress Days is the demonstration of newly manufactured animal drawn equipment demonstrated behind real horses, mules, or oxen in real field conditions to real farmers who can then make choices to maximize profits and efficiencies for their own farms. Almost every year now something new shows up that is either presented as a prototype or is available for purchase. The prototype manufac- turers usually have spent a season or two refining their machines, but they appreciate demonstrating their pieces to their machinery counterparts and to practicing farmers in the hopes that if there are further improvements to be made they can learn about them and there is still time to make changes before the jigs are set up and patterns are built in preparation to meet the marketplace. Most production oriented efforts are not hampered by seasonal cycles, but farming equipment certainly is. The only time to test a piece of farm equipment is during the months of the year when it can be used. So it usually takes several seasons before a piece is far enough along to even be presented as a prototype. In the summer of 2019 I came across a completely newly designed mower when I drove onto the farm of Elam and Linda Stoltzfus and their family called Narvon Natural Acres to deliver a skid of non-GMO chicken feed for my neighbor (Continued on page 27)HORSE PROGRESS DAYS 202126 LN&A Harness Shop LLC 6009 TR 419 • Millersburg OH 44654 Ph 330-893-1024 • Fax 330-893-0112 Quality Harness Cutting some short grass R27 HORSE PROGRESS DAYS 2021 A New Grass Mower from Narvon (continued from page 25) Gideon Fisher who owns Sunset Supply. While this farm is not organic certified, it could be since it is totally committed to this kind of farming. For a number of years chickens were raised and dressed on the farm in a nice little butcher house, as well as some turkeys and laying hens. They also milked a small herd of cows doing once a day milking. And then through some discus- sions with a neighboring farmer who was doing somewhat the same thing, it was decided that the two farms could complement one another rather than compete with each other. Elam took on the cows and began to milk twice a day and the other farmer took the chickens. The two farms exchange product to meet the needs and expecta- tions of their private club customers. The farm makes a variety of dairy products like fluid milk, butter, cottage cheese, yogurt, sour cream and ice cream. They also dress a few turkeys over the holidays. Narvon Natural Acres is a grass fed dairy farm. This means that the 51 acres is kept permanently in grass. The grass has to be managed, often with mowing. A cardinal rule is that the grass be grazed or mowed not too short. Many times the grazing will take care of keeping weeds down and will keep grass in a vegatatively palatable state, but sometimes mowing is necessary. The constant struggle between the efficacious nature of weeds (pollen for pollinators, seeds for birds, and so on) and their own (Continued on page 29)Next >
