Now having reached the mandatorily established maximum term for board membership, his time is up. Eldon is a dairy farmer. He milks about 60 head of cows and raises all his replacement heifers, and some to sell to other dairymen. He keeps eight to 10 Belgian mares to raise foals with and to farm his 150 acres of land. He stands two Belgian stallions in partnerships that include his son. And he and the boys gear lots of their horse time toward the annual Gordyville Sale, which is a highlight of their year. When asked to reflect on his time with the board he responded that he thoroughly enjoyed it all. While he enjoyed every event at every place it was held, he said that two locations in particular stood out to him; the 2011 event at the Henry King farm in Lancaster, PA and the 2016 event in Northern Indiana at the Michiana Event Center. If there was any difficulty with his time on the board it would have been getting everything ready around the farm in preparation to be gone for several days, but his good wife Loretta who always accompanied him, and their fine lot of children made it easier. Without them, he said, he could not have done it. Son Brian, now a full time horse trainer and farrier who calls his operation Schrock Acres Equine, was 19 years old when Eldon first became a member of the board. Daughter Lou Ida was 16, son Jason was 14, Jolene was 12, Lisa was 10, Denise was seven, and Lavon was five. In this case, Eldon and Loretta were able to experience new friendships like the one that came about from traveling with people like Lynn and Mabel Miller, board members from Northern Indiana, to meetings and events. And the crew of youngsters left behind on the farm learned what it means to be responsible for a very highly functioning farming operation, which helped them to become responsible adults. An added bonus for Eldon was to see his sons take active parts in carrying out the event in Illinois, including son Brian driving the 12 horse hitch hooked to the four bottom plow. A long conversation with former board chair Floyd Bontrager at an event while seated with Floyd on a Farm Boy motorized forecart equipped with a raised tongue that saves horses’ hocks when making sharp turns and seeing Pioneer Equipment applying the raised tongues on their forecarts, and then using the same arrangement on the forecarts he uses, interactions with teamsters and manufacturers at all of the various events, seeing the international meeting moved from late in the day to noontime when more people could participate in it; these are all things that have deepened Eldon’s appreciation for Horse Progress Days. And then there was the strong support of the national Board of Directors for the Local Board of Directors the last time the event was held in Illinois when a strong afternoon thunderstorm threatened to take down the tents and dumped additional rain on everything. His own inter- personal relationships and those he observed between others demonstrating great integrity and dependability were most gratifying. It was, he said, despite a few small bumps along the way such as are inherent in all such endeavors, a great ride and a great experience for him. Lamar is not a complete newcomer to the event since he was the vendor coordinator when it was held in Arthur in 2019. He comes recommended as a steady and dependable presence in his endeavors. This is something he demonstrated under great duress when the 2019 event was interrupted about halfway through the afternoon by that huge Midwestern thunderstorm. He was part of the team that gathered late afternoon to make plans for a soggy, hot day on Saturday. The results of some quick planning on the part of that group resulted in a successful outcome the next day. And all of this after he had to deal with a storm and heavy rain the Sunday before the event that actually did bring down the tents. If you have a chance, please join the National Board of Directors in thanking Eldon Schrock for his years served as a member of the Board of Directors of Horse Progress Days and then join the board in welcoming LaMar Schrock as its newest member. ✸Next >
